Polynomials

Explanation

A polynomial is an expression made up of variables, coefficients, and exponents that are whole numbers.

General form:
aₙxⁿ + aₙ₋₁xⁿ⁻¹ + … + a₁x + a₀

Rules for polynomials:

  • Exponents must be whole numbers (0, 1, 2, 3, …)

  • No variables in the denominator

  • No square roots of variables

Examples of polynomials:

  • 3x² + 2x − 5

  • x³ − 4x

  • 7

Not polynomials:

  • 1/x

  • x⁻²

  • √x
