Explanation
When the denominator is more complex, like a binomial with a radical, we use its conjugate.
Example:
1 / (2 + √3) → multiply numerator and denominator by (2 − √3) →
(1 × (2 − √3)) / ((2 + √3)(2 − √3)) = (2 − √3) / (4 − 3) = 2 − √3
Key points:
-
Conjugate: flip the sign between terms
-
Denominator becomes a rational number
