Explanation

The roots of a quadratic equation are the solutions for x.

Methods to find roots:

  • Factoring: set each factor to zero

  • Quadratic formula:
    x = (−b ± √(b² − 4ac)) / 2a

  • Completing the square

Types of roots:

  • Two distinct real roots (b² − 4ac > 0)

  • One real root (b² − 4ac = 0)

  • Two complex roots (b² − 4ac < 0)
