Explanation

Conic sections are curves formed when a plane cuts a cone.

There are four main types:

  1. Circle

  2. Ellipse

  3. Parabola

  4. Hyperbola

Each conic has a standard equation and geometric meaning.

Examples of standard forms:

  • Circle: (x − h)² + (y − k)² = r²

  • Ellipse: (x − h)²/a² + (y − k)²/b² = 1

  • Hyperbola: (x − h)²/a² − (y − k)²/b² = 1

Conics are used in:

  • Astronomy

  • Physics

  • Engineering

  • Architecture
