Explanation

A hyperbola has two separate curves (branches).

Standard form (center at origin):
x²/a² − y²/b² = 1 (horizontal transverse axis)

y²/a² − x²/b² = 1 (vertical transverse axis)

Key features:

  • Center

  • Vertices

  • Asymptotes

  • Foci

Hyperbolas involve subtraction, not addition.
